Introduction

Happy Moments is an ongoing project for people from the community to recall stories of their happy times, what has made them smile, laugh or simply feel happy. Instead of looking backwards with regret they can gain a perspective about their lives and thereby others.

They can look forward knowing the good times that they have lived through. There can be benefits both psychologically and physically.

Myrna Shoa and Donald Dede developed the concept for Happy Moments and initiated the first project via Russell Lambert at The Pepperpot Day Centre, London W11 in November 2008.

At first they worked with a group of people then found out that some preferred to talk one to one and others in twos or threes. Nobody knew what to expect, as this was a new approach to reminiscences. People discovered other aspects about their friends and developed a greater respect for each other.

Many people participated but a few wished to contribute more and what follows are some of their stories. The stories were recorded, typed up, retaining the spoken word, by Myrna and Donald and relevant images collected.

A special thanks to: Cecilia Sonola, Dermot Davis and Lionel Hackett for their effort and contributions. Thanks also to Ethel Webb, Gertrude Faucher, Gloria Williams, Joseph Koffie and Nathan Gordon for their stories and thoughts.

We hope to gather more stories in the future from The Pepperpot Day Centre as well as from other organisations.

Myrna Shoa is an artist, community filmmaker and lover of stories. She works with Zodiac Arts (Disability and Sports) and TTOWF. Donald Dede is a Graphic Designer and digital artist.

Myrna Shoa has been running reminiscence groups with Open Age.
