Seen And Unseen. Ferens Art Gallery - Nahem Shoa
Emma Petrie
BBC News An artist says he has faced racism within the art world and has struggled to find galleries willing to display his portraits of black people. However, classically-trained Nahem Shoa said museums were increasingly open to representing images of non-white subjects. The artist has put together an exhibition focusing on race and identity which opens at Ferens Art Gallery in Hull on Friday 18 October. Mr Shoa said it was a "dream come true" that his work would appear alongside artists including Rembrandt and Lucian Freud. |
Mr Shoa, from London, was a graffiti artist before he trained as a painter. The artist won the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 1992 and exhibited his work at the National Portrait Gallery's BP portrait awards the following year.
He began painting his friends but struggled to get the portraits displayed in galleries. He said that some museums "didn't even reply to me". "It was a project about race, but the project itself received a lot of racism, so it was barely shown, up until recently," he said. Mr Shoa said museums changed their attitudes towards his work after the death of George Floyd, the African-American man who was murdered by white police officer Derek Chauvin in Minnesota during an arrest. Following Mr Floyd's death, protests spread across the world as part of the Black Lives Matter movement, which campaigns for freedom, justice and equality. |
Seen And Unseen. During the time of Covid and post Covid artist Nahem Shoa has created a startling series of coloured pencil 'paintings exploring in the language of myths, the concerns of the time, Covid, Black Lives Matter and nature taking care of our planet.
"Covid Odyssey is a series of coloured pencil paintings that explore the mythic stories around the Cover 19 pandemic: the metaphor of entering the dark forest into the unknown and our future destiny. Black lives Matter, Climate Change, Covid 19 and polluting our fragile planet with our waste all feed into the narrative of these works. We are all on a journey due to the pandemic, that has brought out all the injustices in our society, which have been seen but not seen. My characters in these paintings including myself are wearing the rainbow symbol of diversity, and are partly being hidden by the leaves preventing them from being seen, which reflects how society has kept certain people invisible. My work has always been about shining light on what deserves to be seen, but due to racism and class have been kept hidden.," Nahem Shoa

BLACK PRESENCE, Saturday 21 September 2019 until Saturday 23 November 2019, BLACK PRESENCE, curated by artist Nahem Shoa chose a large selection of his striking oil paintings of black sitters. They were shown alongside key portraits by a wide range of British artists from the 18th century to the present day.
"Nahem Shoa is especially keen to increase the number of positive images of black people in British art collections and has donated many of his own works to this effect. This exhibition includes, among others, work by Joshua Reynolds, Desmond Haughton and Sonia Boyce, as well as Allan Ramsay’s outstanding ‘Portrait of an African (probably Ignatius Sancho)’. Some of the paintings in the exhibition are from The Atkinson’ collection and the contrast with Nahem’s work is immediately obvious. Historic images including those from The Atkinson’s collection tend to be negative and based on a limited number of stereotypes" – Stephen Whittle, Principal Manager, The Atkinson Multiculturalism is now acknowledged as a fact of life in 21st century Britain. Shoa’s paintings of his friends are a unique contribution to celebrate this mix of race. An illustrated catalogue of the exhibition will be available to purchase.
